Where once Coonawarra was the undisputed king of Australian Cabernet, in the past two decades, Margaret River has not only made significant ground in claiming that title but surely now made it its own. With a climate not dissimilar to that of Bordeaux the final piece of the jigsaw - price - now allows us to bring 95-97 Point rated wines at more than reasonable prices. Not only does our StarDozen serve to highlight the exceptional quality and value here but also the remarkably consistently excellent recent vintages that Eastern Australia could only wish for. This collection features 3 bottles each from 4 renowned Margaret River producers with a whopping 95 Points or better from Australia's leading wine critics.

The StarDozen consists of the following:

3 bottles      Cullen Margaret River Cabernet Merlot 2019
3 bottles      Amelia Park Cabernet Merlot 2018
3 bottles      Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
3 bottles      Larry Cherubino Pedestal Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Cullen Margaret River Cabernet Merlot 2019
So dense and brooding, concentrated, and yet has a lightness and vigour that makes it so appealing. Black fruit, ripe raspberry, cedar and biscuit spice, dark chocolate and violets, bay leaf, with a sort of wet clay/mineral character in the mix. Tannin is firm and silty/slatey, fresh feel despite all that dark chocolate flavour, and the finish is long, with a black tea perfume trailing. Wonderful. Tasted: Apr 2021; Alcohol: 13%; Price: $40; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2022-2030+; Rated: 95 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front

Amelia Park Cabernet Merlot 2018
75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 8% Malbec. Vibrant, bright and enticing, with plush cassis, spiced plum, black forest cake and lemongrass aromas leading through to seamless oak, rolling tannins and savoury, plummy, lush black berry fruit. Rating: 97 Points & Platinum Medal; Decanter World Wine Awards 2020

Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Bright crimson-purple; this has provenance written large across its visage, likewise purity. Restructuring of the Vasse Felix offers to the market has lifted, not compromised, this dark, fruit-filled cabernet. Drink to: 2032; Price: $28.00; Date Tasted: Sep 2019; Alcohol: 14%; Rating: 96 Points & Special Value Star & Top 100 Wines of 2019; James Halliday; Wine Companion

Larry Cherubino Pedestal Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
From vineyards in Wilyabrup, matured in French oak for 12 months. It ticks all the boxes with its cassis fruit on the one hand, firm cabernet tannins on the other providing all-up balance. Exceptional value for a wine with an extended drinking window of opportunity. Drink to: 2033; Price: $25.00; Date Tasted: Nov 2020; Alcohol: 14%; Rating: 96 Points & Special Value Star & Top 100 Wines for 2020; James Halliday Wine Companion
