Three varieties very well suited to the McLaren Vale region in South Australia. Bush Vine Grenache provides aromatic lift and bright red fruit characters. Shiraz lends powdery tannin, spice and mid-palate weight, while Mourvèdre rounds out the blend and contributes balance and structure. This wine is a fun and challenging puzzle to assemble each vintage and will age gracefully up to a decade after release.
I cited this as the finest GSM in Australia a number of years ago. While subsequent vintages have been good without being stellar, this is a proud return to form. A mandala of spicy tannins serve as the base for blue and black fruit, cloves, white pepper, tapenade, iodine and scrub. A poised and profound wine, but dangerously easy to drink. Fine stuff. Drink or hold. Screw cap. Rating: 95 Points; Ned Goodwin MW in James Suckling
It's a complex matrix, yielding a harmonious whole. Raspberry and blueberry, olive and anise, violet and lavender, ground pepper and brown cardamom, iodine and nori. The palate is finely grippy, allowing textural glide while prepping the scene for food. It's thoughtfully constructed, but that detail is never taxing on the easy enjoyment. Delicious. Drink to: 2032; Date Tasted: May 2025; Alcohol: 14.6%; Price: $35.00; Rating: 94 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
