Penna Lane’s managing director, Peter Treloar, has a connection with the Clare wine region that began five generations ago. In 1865 Peter’s ancestor, Francis Treloar, acquired land in Watervale and planted the first vines in the area which became known as Springvale. The vineyard is recognised as one of the best in the Clare Valley. Based on the philosophy that good wine is made in the vineyard, great care was taken with the original plantings and this level of vineyard rigour continues today.

The Penna Lane Watervale Riesling is true to the style of this famous Riesling region, offering both generous fruit flavours and a fine acid profile.

Tightly wound and vibrant, driven by electric natural acidity. Intense lime juice and citrus pith flavours dominate, layered with Granny Smith apple and a fine mineral edge. The structure is linear and precise, carrying excellent tension through the mid-palate before finishing long, dry and mouth-wateringly persistent. A Riesling that is true to style and region, sourced from around Leasingham, where there are, and have been over many years, some of the finest Rieslings in the country made. The aroma is a lemon pith, tart lime, and slightly minerally combination, and the palate shows a typical tension, and yet there is a deep intensity. This is from a vineyard at Leasingham in the famed Watervale sub-region of South Australia’s Clare Valley. It’s a frisky riesling, and a long-flavoured one, with lime juice and lime leaf flavours floating into bath salts, florals, rust and steel. Both freshness and length are its best friends, courtesy of its long, lean, scintillating flavour profile. It needs either super-fresh seafood or a stint in the cellar to show its best.
