Just over 20 years ago, Claymore Wines was humbly established with small volumes of Grenache and Riesling from a single vineyard in Penwortham. Since then, the estate has grown to include additional varietals and 44 hectares across three additional vineyards in Watervale.

Wow, you get some real intensity on the nose with this one from the Clare Valley. There's an intensity of lemon rind and a slightly pithy character, plus a slatey minerality. The palate has a refreshing, crunchy mouthfeel with a tense thread running deep within the powerful and intense fruit. There's almost a smoky character here that adds further to what is a most engaging and intriguing wine. Will certainly handle some extended cellaring. The fruit coming from Claymore estate blocks in Watervale as well as picks out of Auburn and Sevenhill parishes. It's a very pretty wine from the outset: powdery lemon sherbet, Bickfords lime cordial, lime tree florals, all the aromatic joys of the variety and region with a cool, refreshing set of palate flavours reflecting the initial enticements, a fruity tang to match. The team at Claymore are closely associated with their love for music and this is reflected in pretty much everything they do. Noting that they 'get by with a little help from our friends', the fruit is sourced from local growers from Auburn and Sevenhill, blended with their Estate’s Watervale Riesling. A very pale lemon hue, this is quite a forward, bright style of Riesling. Destined to be drunk a little earlier than some of the classic Clare Rieslings, and nothing wrong with that, we have notes of florals, nectarines, lemon spongecake and a touch of peaches. There is zippy acidity in this wine of medium length. An attractive style for drinking anytime over the next four to six years. Good value. Rating: 92 Points; Ken Gargett
