Margan Family Winegrowers are a multi-generational grape growing and winemaking operation established by Andrew and Lisa Margan in 1996. The estate now farms 90 hectares of vines following regenerative agricultural principles on the historic Fordwich Sill (Broke Fordwich GI), a truly iconic volcanic soil formation dating back nearly 200 million years.
Timbervines Chardonnay block of only 3 acres was planted in 1972 on the red volcanic soil of the Fordwich Sill and continuously produces high quality concentrated fruit with a distinct lime acid backbone. Naturally fermented on full solids in 1-2year old puncheons, this modern Australian chardonnay shows the perfect balance of subtle oak, texture, elegant fruit, and long acidity.
This wine is sourced from a 1ha block planted on the red volcanic soil of Margan's Timbervines Vineyard planted in 1972. Its fragrant bouquet heralds a palate of high-quality chardonnay, white peach and grapefruit running throughout a classy wine. This boasts considerably more flavor than its more tightly wound sibling. Mid-weighted of feel, with an exuberant nose of honeydew melon, green grape and yellow plum. A whiff of cedar oak and nougat across the finish, but this is more on the fruit and less of the nuttier flavor spectrum. Very good drinking in this cooler year. Perhaps the better wine of the two.
