Crabtree is situated in the heart of the historic and iconic Watervale district, the tasting room and courtyard (set in the produce cellar of the original 1850s homestead) looking out over the estate vineyard. The winery was founded in 1984 by Robert Crabtree, who built a considerable reputation for medal-winning riesling, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. In 2007 it was purchased by an independent group of wine enthusiasts, and the winery firmly continues in the tradition of estate-grown premium wines.
This Riesling, sourced from vines on our estate aged between 22 and 46 years, has everything you expect from a Watervale Riesling. The bouquet is redolent with fresh lemon and lime, touches of orange blossom and notes of wild flowers. On the palate, the wine is perfectly balanced with a fresh citrus backing.
A lovely example of Watervale Riesling, sourced from five separate blocks on the Xxxxx vineyard. Like much of the region, the vines sit on classic terra rossa over limestone. The nose shows flinty bath salts and lemon zest, while the palate is deeply intense and lively. Subtle lemon zest weaves through the palate, combining with crisp, fine acidity to carry into a very long, racy, crunchy finish. Drink: 2025 - 2035; Price: $34.00; Rating: 94 Points; Ray Jordan
The grapes for this Watervale Riesling are from vines between 23 and 47 years of age. The colour here is a pale lemon. There is quite punchy aromas here, with citrus, florals, limes and a hint of mandarin all evident. There is a gentle chalky backing. This is a lovely classic Clare Watervale Riesling. The acid is soft and juicy, the wine balanced and there is a long and lingering finish. Notes of lemons and limes continue to emerge on the finish. This should provide pleasure for the next twelve to fifteen years at least. Drink: 2025 - 2040; Price: $34.00; Rating: 94 Points; Ken Gargett
