Established in 1998 Hewitson winery is situated in the heart of the Barossa Valley on the historic Seppeltsfield Road and boasts some of the oldest vines in the World. Our fruit is sourced from these dry-grown, pre-Phylloxera vineyards of the Barossa Valley and also single site vineyards in Eden Valley, McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. We believe great wines are the expression of the soils they are grown in and in the seasons they grow. Through knowledge and experience we strive for balance, structure, concentration, power and breeding.

From 2016 this has been a selection from the best vineyards of the vintage and in 2020 there was some sensational fruit from which to choose. The colour is deep and dark. The aromas burst with dark chocolate liqueur and satsuma plums with a sprinkle of coffee grounds and dried herbs. It has been made to retain its fruit elegance which is delivered with such poise. Bottle price: $50.00; Drink to: 2022 - 2037; Alcohol: 14%; Rating: 96 Points; Ray Jordan

Yet another superb Barossa Shiraz, from the powerful 2020 vintage, this one is from a single vineyard. The nose just grabs you and tells you that you’ll love this wine. There is power and concentration, and a great future, but it also offers joy now. The chocolate persists throughout and we have beefstock, soy, licorice, plums and black fruits. This is very, very long and with extremely fine tannins. Wonderful wine which will drink superbly for two decades. The score should go even higher during that period. Bottle price: $50.00; Drink to: 2022 - 2042; Alcohol: 14%; Rating: 96 Points; Ken Gargett

Grown on a selection of Hewitson’s "best vineyards". No new oak used but all of it went into almost new oak, one and two year old. The spread of tannin here is excellent. It establishes the wine’s quality from the outset. The fruit is ripe but not overly dense; a positive. Redcurrant and pure plum into clove, mint, sweet herb and cedar. Lovely flavour profile. It has presence but it also feels energetic, and then that latticework of tannin spreads out. Yes. It’s a beauty. Tasted: July 2022; Alcohol: 14%; Price: $50.00; Closure: Cork; Drink: 2024-2032+; Rated: 94 Points; Campbell Mattinson; The Wine Front
