Established in 1858 by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s Wines is one of Australia’s pre-eminent family owned wine companies with vineyards extending from their historic home in the Hunter Valley to the Limestone Coast (SA) and Heathcote (VIC). Headed up by fourth generation family member Bruce Tyrrell, Tyrrell’s is home to some of Australia’s most awarded wines including the iconic Vat 1 Semillon. Since 1971, Tyrrell’s has been awarded over 5,000 trophies and medals and in 2010 was named “Winery of the Year” in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion. With the fifth generation, Chris, Jane and John, involved in the business, Tyrrell’s will continue to remain family owned with the simple philosophy of producing high quality wine that people love to drink.

Mother’s vineyard is situated adjacent to Chris and Tegan Tyrrell’s home and has always been known as Mother’s after Murray Tyrrell’s mother, who lived there for her entire married life. This block was planted in 2010 with cuttings from 4 Acres, Johnno’s and Old Patch, ensuring that our best Shiraz clones are preserved.

Vivid purple colour. As is the case with all of the 2018 Shiraz wines, Mother’s has a strong aromatic based on the typical red-fruit spectrum. A fresh, juicy, medium-bodied palate with only a hint of oak that is incredibly drinkable even at this early stage of its life.

Mother's really hitting its straps in 2018. Sweet Hunter earth, perfume, boysenberry, cherry, bit of cracked pepper, mint. Medium-bodied, purple fruit, forest berries, creamy mid-palate and tannin, mouth-perfume, clean minerally acid, very good length. A lush feel, and exceptionally high drinking appeal. Tempted to rate it a little higher. Alcohol: 13.7%; Price: $45; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2024-2034; Rated: 94 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
