The Crayères vineyard is located at the top of a north-south limestone ridge in Wrattonbully, one of Australia’s most exciting regions. This vineyard has been baptised the Crayères Vineyard after the chalk cellars in Xavier’s region of birth in Champagne, France because of the natural limestone caves found underneath the vineyard.
One serious – and seriously elegant – wine that is pure, fine-boned and oh so engaging. The scent of lifted florals, rose, pepper, spice and a big bouquet of red fruits and plums sets the scene. Arrives harmonious and even tannin-ed throughout – nary a hair out of place – with a natural brightness of acidity against a rich palette of fruit flavour and spice. Drink to: 2031; Price: $35.00; Rating: 95 Points; Jeni Port
The oak influence is minimal but important in that the wine is matured in aged French oak and old oak foudres. The result is a wine displaying vibrancy and life with a purity of expression. Integrated chalky tannins add support while that subtle oak plays its part. Poised and balanced through a medium body to a long finish. Drink to: 2025-2036; Price: $35.00; Rating: 95 Points; Ray Jordan
Ludicrous value too. A sappy, succulent red of pitch-perfect medium weight, snappy with its tart and brisk red berry fruitiness, trimmed with stony, pulverised stone tannins, lifted with blood orange acidity and dashed with dried herbs, light hazelnut savouriness and a sprinkle of black pepper. Curiously, there’s almost a pinosity to the wine, lighter weight, poised, length and svelte as it rolls around the palate. An impressive and delicious red wine. Price: $35; Drink: 2025-2030+; Rated: 94 Points; The Wine Front
Red cherries and cranberry juice. This shows the pretty side of franc with some plummy mid-palate weight. Tannins are angular and acidity crunchy. There are some blackberry fruit notes with raspberry roll-ups in the mix, too. Spices are on the side of cassia bark and dusty cinnamon. A wine for those that enjoy perfumed wines with a lofty touch. Great value. Drink to: 2028; Price: $35.00; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 93 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
