The most sublime and the most celebrated estate of Chablis, the wines of Domaine Raveneau are a rare find—exceptional because the vineyard holdings are almost entirely made of grand cru and premier cru fruit, painfully finite as so few are produced, outstanding because of their tremendous quality and consistency, and unusual given the modesty of the vignerons who create these world-class wines.
The 2023 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur, derived from a steep, south-facing site, is showing superbly and is one of the wines of the vintage. With more mid-palate amplitude than any other wine in the range, it soars from the glass with a bouquet of extraordinary complexity, featuring notes of iodine, acacia, grapefruit zest and oyster shell. Isabelle Raveneau explains that the parcel is like a small natural amphitheater, and work is mostly done in the mornings since it’s too hot to work there during the day. On the palate, the wine is deep, full-bodied and multifaceted, with incredible concentration, tangy acidity and striking intensity, finishing with a long, saline aftertaste. Both more tensile and slightly more linear than the dramatic Clos that followed it, this is a brilliant Valmur. Date: Mar 2025; Rating: 96-98 Points; Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate
This could be from nowhere else with its equally reticent nose of shellfish, quinine, pear, green apple and an abundance of citrus elements. There is excellent volume and outstanding richness to the dense, muscular and powerful broad-shouldered flavors that possess an agreeably dry, sappy and beautifully long finish that is borderline tannic. This is a very serious and powerful Valmur that is clearly built for longer-term cellaring. In a word, impressive. Tasted: Oct 2025; Drink: 2035+; Issue: 100; Rating 95 Points; Allen Meadows; Burghound
