Pierro are fortunate in that beautiful Willyabrup vineyard is located in what is widely regarded as amongst the finest wine grape growing terrain in the world. Located in the heart of Western Australia's renowned Margaret River wine region, this far flung locality has a viticultural pedigree second to none. The Pierro property on Caves Rd was acquired by estate patriarch Dr Mike Peterkin in 1979.

The success of this wine has meant that there is much about the winemaking process that has become traditional at Pierro: the wine is barrel fermented in new  and one year old French barriques; a hundred per cent goes through the malolactic fermentation and has regular lees stirring (battonage) during its 12 month oak maturation. Mike Peterkin remains a strong supporter of the role that the malolactic fermentation can play in improving the flavour and length of palate of the Chardonnay. Battonage gives a seamless character and creamy texture to the wine.

Peach, pear and fennel, spiced butter cashews, flinty top note, a little saline with it. Lively acidity and chalky dusty texture, creamy with some tropical accents, and a lime-laced finish of excellent length. Such regal carriage and delivery of bold Chardonnay flavour. Date: Oct 2023; Alcohol: 14%; Price: $130; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2024-2030+; Rated: 95 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
