Mystery Museum Release Bendigo Shiraz 2007
While frost reduced yields to an insane 20 tonnes for the entire 70 acres, there's no doubting the quality of fruit in this museum release. Aged 18 months in 30% new French barrique and since then gracefully developing more complex flavours. In excellent condition, thanks in part to the screwcap, its deep, dark-garnet hue belying its age, everything beautifully sewn together, the tannins, acidity, the fruit just a hint of black licorice and unctuous aged balsamic. Pitch-perfect now but still plenty of life ahead of it. Date: Jan 2018; Alcohol: 14.5%; Drink by: 2027; Rating: 96 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
Mystery Premium Margaret River Shiraz 2022
A cleverly made shiraz that reveals what this variety can deliver in Margaret River. It’s co-fermented with a small amount of spicy viognier and then gets a little carbonic maceration, both of which contribute to its perfumed aromas and bright palate. It then gets 17 months in a mix of French and American oak. Velvety smooth palate, yet there is power here driving a sustained finish. An effortless wine of class. Drink to: 2024-2036; Price: $100.00; Rating: 96 Points; Ray Jordan
Mystery Barossa Valley Shiraz 2018
50 year old vines, hand-picked, wild yeast-open fermented, 14 days on skins, matured for 20 months in French oak (50 per cent new). Full of blackberry fruit, part fresh, part jam. Spice also appears on the bouquet and palate. Cellaring will be rewarded. Drink to: 2038; Date Tasted: February 2020; Alcohol: 15%; Rating: 95 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion
Mystery Premium Yarra Valley Syrah 2021
Whole bunches (80%), natural yeast ferment, no plunging or pump overs. Three weeks on skins before six months' maturation in older French oak. A saturated crimson purple. With its aromas of black raspberries, cherries, whole-bunch derived potpourri and violets, this reminds me of good St Joseph from the northern Rhône. There's excellent intensity and concentration on the palate, too, without any heaviness before finishing long, grippy tannins ensuring a prosperous life ahead. Drink to: 2035; Price: $65.00; Alcohol: 13%; Rating: 97 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
