A pioneering estate with vines first planted in 1896, the lovingly restored property just five kilometers east of Auburn lives and breathes the region’s winemaking traditions, embracing a new generation of custodianship under the watchful eye of Nick George.

Varietal Mataro rarely seems to be more than an occasional cameo to round out a portfolio. This one is most definitely deserving of a much better billing. A cracking example and a thoroughly enjoyable wine. From their Bass Hill Vineyard, it was bottled simply because the fruit really stood up and stood out. This is a deep maroon in colour. It is powerful and burly, entirely in keeping with what one expects from the variety, with blackcurrants, spices, cranberries, coffee grinds, warm earth and mushrooms topped by hints of plums. There is some serious grip here and good length too. Big, burly, slightly old-fashioned but delicious. A good fifteen to twenty years ahead for this wine, for those with patience. Date Tasted: December 2023; Drink to: 2023-2043; Price: $35.00; Rating: 94 Points; Ken Gargett
