Three legends are involved in the Domaine Epis and Epis and Williams wines, two of them in their own lifetime. They are long-term Essendon guru and former player Alec Epis, who owns the two quite separate vineyards and brands; Stuart Anderson, who directs winemaking, with Alec doing all the hard work; and the late Laurie Williams, the father of viticulture in the Macedon region and the man who established the Flynn and Williams vineyard in 1976. Alec Epis purchased that vineyard from Laurie Williams in '99, and as a mark of respect (and with Laurie's approval) continued to use his name, in conjunction with his own.
The nose is immediately complex and very vibrant. It is initially floral, nutty and spicy. Then aromas of grapefruit, nectarine and cream appear. The palate is fresh, energetic, textured, mouth filling, harmonious and very long. It will improve for seven plus years when carefully cellared and has a long life ahead of it. It is up there with the best Chardonnays (since the inaugural 1994) grown on this special site, which is fitting for the 30th vintage.
