The new faces behind the Curtis Family Vineyards are Mark, Thomas & Jenna Curtis, with the guidance of their father, Claudio Curtis who lives on the vineyard just outside McLaren Vale. The name Curtis is thought to derive from Curtius, a noble and wealthy family of the First and Second Centuries AD, the Roman Empire era originating from the Latinium people.
It is sweetly fragrant and instantly appealing on the nose showing dark and purple fruit aromas together with tar, game, cocoa and spicy oak nuances. The palate is rich, intense and fleshy, displaying excellent power as well as rounded mouthfeel, wonderfully complemented by velvety texture and silky tannins. Impressively flavoursome and very long on the finish with loads of delectable flavours. Now to 2027; Price: $70.00; Rating: 95 Points; Sam Kim; Wine Orbit
Hand-picked 60yo vines, crushed and destemmed, open-fermented with cultured yeast, 14 days on skins, matured in new French hogsheads for 10 months. The deep, vivid colour signals a newborn full-bodied wine that needs many years to open its door for business. It is balanced, and its impenetrable black forest of fruit, French oak and powerful, but supple, tannins will all play a role. Drink to: 2041; Price: $70.00; Alcohol: 14%; Rating: 94 Points; James Halliday; Wine Companion
