Crabtree is situated in the heart of the historic and iconic Watervale district, the tasting room and courtyard (set in the produce cellar of the original 1850s homestead) looking out over the estate vineyard. The winery was founded in 1984 by Robert Crabtree, who built a considerable reputation for medal-winning riesling, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. In 2007 it was purchased by an independent group of wine enthusiasts, and the winery firmly continues in the tradition of estate-grown premium wines.

Delicate aromas of crushed apple, lemon blossom and spring flowers lead into a bright, citrus-driven palate. Picked at first light and gently pressed, the wine carries a refreshing backbone of lemon and grapefruit, finishing with a distinctive, savoury touch of olive-juice salinity.

Fiano continues to establish itself firmly in Australian soils, and this Clare Valley example shows why. Light, airy and racy, it opens with crunchy lemon and grapefruit, underpinned by a subtle sea spray note that adds complexity. The palate is finely balanced with bright intensity, making it a wine for drinking and enjoying in its youth. Drink to: 2026-2030; Price: $34.00; Rating: 93 Points; Ray Jordan

The Italian white grape, Fiano, continues to grow in popularity and deservedly so. This example from the Watervale subregion in the Clare Valley is yellow in colour. There are notes of walnuts, citrus, stone fruits, green olives, pears and almonds on the nose. This is nicely balanced with a juicy palate, zesty acidity and an attractive lingering finish. Savoury in style, it will drink very well over the next four to six years. Drink to: 2026-2031; Price: $34.00; Rating: 92 Points; Ken Gargett
