Château de Chamirey overlooks the village of Chamirey and was built in the 18th century. An elegant château influenced by the Italian architecture, looking down on a French garden. Built on a rocky headland, Château de Chamirey has a unqiue position on Mercurey vineyards. Nowadays, the Domaine is owned and run by Amaury et Aurore Devillard who represent the 5th generation of winemaking in Burgundy within this family. In 1934, their grand-father, Marquis de Jouennes decided to bottle the wines of Château de Chamirey at the Domaine. His son-in-law, Bertrand Devillard carried on his work and has extended the holdings of Domaine in the best terroirs of Mercurey, to reach its present size of 95 acres.

The 2019 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos l'Évêque unwinds in the glass with notes of sweet red berries, wild plums and warm spices, framed by a deft patina of oak. Medium to full-bodied, lively and charming, with melting tannins and bright acids, it concludes with a mouthwatering finish. Date: July 2021; Drink: 2021-2038 Rating: 92 Points; William Kelley; Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate

More moderate wood sets off very ripe yet fresh menthol-tined aromas of cassis, black cherry liqueur and spice. There is again excellent volume, mid-palate density and richness to the suave and seductively textured flavors that possess better depth on the lingering finish. This too is somewhat woody, but the underlying quality makes this worth checking out provided you have the intention of holding it for at least a few years first so that the wood treatment can more completely integrate. Drink: 2027+; Rating: 90-93 Points; Allen Meadows; Burghound
