Established 80 years ago, but with a story spanning 95 years, the Calabria journey has not been an easy road but through determination, hard work and family vision, Calabria Family Wines has flourished to be one of Australia's top 20 wine producers.
Calabria Family Wines have been crafting this hero variety of the Riverina since 1995. Specially selected parcels of fruit stay on the vine to develop botrytis cinera, a fungus that naturally occurs under the conditions of the region. This intensifies the sweetenss of the grapes, making them perfect for dessert wine.
A warmer-than-average year with an exceptional and high percentage of botrytis in the vineyard. Freshly squeezed pineapple, coconut and lime set the tone – an island escape in a glass. Bergamot, mock orange blossom and frangipani blooms rise aromatically, adding heady lift. Sweetness swirls through the palate, enticing bright acidity to snap and energise, such is the vitality of this nectarous wine. The botrytis is pristine and precise, concentrating the fruit while introducing notes of lemon and yuzu curd. Subtle oak just adds a shade to the backdrop of powdered spice. Beautifully balanced, it walks a fine knife-edge of acidity and sweetness, delivering both indulgence and poise in equal measure. The value of this wine, considering labour and arduous vineyard management, is immense.
