Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around". Five generations and 160 years later Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned winery, has grown in sizeand stature, embodying all that has made the Australian wine success story the envy of winemakers the world over.

In 1992 the Hill-Smith family counted themselves amongst those fortunate enough to own a vineyard upon the famous Coonawarra terra rossa soil over limestone. Experimentation, innovation, minimalist intervention and small batch winemaking has resulted in The Menzies Museum Release 2015's reputation as a wine of longevity, elegance and structure.

A classy Coonawarra cabernet sauvignon museum offering, made by Peter Gambetta, from the strong 2015 vintage. There's a solid pedigree of longevity with The Menzies and this release is beginning to show that potential. Brightly coloured with pure blackberry, blood plum and blackcurrant fruits, there's still some primary exuberance to the fruit profile; it seems youthful. There's hints of mixed spice, a light shading of tobacco and dark chocolatey things and a passing glance of mint. The tannins are compact and powdery and there is a long, elegant finish that shows excellent sustain and harmony.
