Syrah at Warramunda was planted in 2007 on the gentle north-facing slope of the Estate. Bests Old Block clone was selected to accentuate the hallmarks of this great Coldstream vineyard; fragrant fruit, earthy spice and the silkiest of tannins. Two separate parcels were selectively hand-picked from the North facing middle section of the Estate. All winemaking decisions were focused on preserving freshness and detail. Exploring the glorious aromatics of Bests Old Clone Syrah. The final blend consisted of 75% WBF and 25% whole berry ferment.

The wine was produced from the Estate vineyard in Coldstream that has been planted to the Bests old clone. Having looked at the wines produced from this site over the last few years they continue to grow with vine age and understanding of site. The 2018 is a particularly good release. A vibrant, medium red in colour with a nose that is floral and fruit driven initially, but builds with bracken and savoury nuance before a gentle weave of spice. The palate has weight and presence with dark plum and black cherry that is softened and accentuated by brighter red fruits. Vanillin spice works alongside tannins that are layered with pepper and charcuterie. The length to finish is considerable with a tar and roses like aspect that lingers. Liquorice, chocolate, cherries and spice. Richness, juicy cherry and plum, spice and fine grained tannin, pulling into red fruits on a long smooth finish. Stylish. I may have even under-rated it a little. Tasted: September 2020; Alcohol: 13.5%; Price: $55.00; Closure: Diam; Drink: 2020-2028; Rated: 93 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
