Mount Mary is one of the great small wineries of Australia, established by Dr John Middleton in 1972. Production is tiny. Mount Mary is noted for both the character and high quality of its wines. Since the first vintage in 1976, it has established itself as one of Australia's most highly regarded producers, commanding a mythical status among wine collectors. The vineyard faces due north and captures optimum sunlight during the growing season. The purity of fruit, poise and structure of Quintet, a Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot blend, epitomises the estate. It resonates with individuality of place and Dr John’s fastidious respect for the landscape. Mount Mary has continued to take great steps forward while staying true to the vision of Dr John, whose son David oversees the business while grandson Sam Middleton has taken on the winemaking mantle with aplomb.

Bunch-sorted on vibrating tables, Oscillys-destemmed whole berries, 10-14 days on skins, matured 14-18 months in oak (25% new). Not a hair out of place, all the boxes with big ticks. A perfumed bouquet with rose petals and tantalising hints of forest, the vibrantly fresh palate with a diamond-clear stream of red fruits and spices. The length is awesome. Drink to: 2038; Alcohol: 13.3%; Rating: 98 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday

Gee, they've turned out a very good Pinot Noir in 2018. Strawberries, roses, cinnamon toast and biscuits, a whisper of undergrowth. Medium-bodied, autumnal feel, a little rhubarb, coolness and ‘mineral' feel, finesse to the acidity and supremely 'elegant' feel to the wine, fine graphite tannin, and a wonderfully long and fragrant strawberry and spice finish. Gee, this is a special wine. I'm smitten. Alcohol: 13.3%; Closure: Cork; Drink: 2022 - 2035; Rated: 96 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
