Houghton was established in 1836, just four years after the fledgling colony of Western Australia was founded. It is one of Australia's oldest operating wineries. Houghton is now the tenth-largest red and white bottle brand in Australia, and sources fruit from every major premium grape-growing region in WA, including Gingin, Margaret River, Frankland River and Mount Barker in the Great Southern, and the emerging Pemberton region.

Cabernet Sauvignon of the Year 2025. This is elegance personified. So smooth, so luscious, so rich and yet it finds levity and a sense of drive. Inky cassis, lavender and violet floral lift, fancy feeling mahogany and new leather elements, clove spice, bay leaf and faint sea spray characters in the mix. It feels quite tightly wound despite its velvety suppleness and flow, tannins in a web of fine, graphite-like mineral accents delivering tension and poise. It's a wine that delivers an experience and visceral pleasure. Drink now after a lusty decant, but save some for long cellaring, too. Awarded Top Rank. The grapes for this iconic red come from the Justin vineyard. A very bright, deep and youthful purple colour introduces concentrated mulberry/blackcurrant fruit on the nose which confirms the variety's identity, while classy oak is definitely there but tucked into the background. This is an outstanding wine. It's firm, it's rich, it's commanding. The palate is silk and the fruit is juicy but herbs are driven through and there's genuine weight, not to mention impact. Blackcurrant, vanilla cream, tobacco, cedar and those strings of herbs. The (creamy) texture and wealth of flavour get you in, but it's the tannin and the length that stays with you.
