Hoddles Creek Estate was established in 1997 when the D'Anna family decided to establish a vineyard on the property that has been in the family since 1960. The vineyard sits astride Gembrook road and adjacent Hoddles Creek. Its steeply sloping blocks prohibit mechanical harvesting, with both vineyards being hand pruned and harvested. All wines are single vineyard and estate grown.

Cool(ish) year, small yields. This is the best HCE Chardonnay I can recall tasting. White peach, green pear, a little citrus, fine spicy oak, almond, discreet struck match. It’s tight, but has flavour, plenty of flinty and chalky texture, ripe lemon and lemon peel, almond biscotti and green olive, firm crunch of pure acidity, and a long and racy finish that so mouth-watering and zesty. My word. Date: Apr 2023; Alcohol: 13.2%; Price: $26; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2024-2030+; Rated: 95 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front

It’s nigh on impossible to match Hoddles Creek Estate’s marriage of fastidious vineyard care and handling in the winery, Franco D’Anna pulling the levers at precisely the right moment. There is strictly limited introduction of oak without any sense of loss. Date: Nov 2023; Alcohol: 13.2%; Price: $25.00; Drink by: 2030; Rating: 95 Points & Top 100 Wines for 2023; James Halliday Wine Companion
