Established in 1998 Hewitson winery is situated in the heart of the Barossa Valley on the historic Seppeltsfield Road and boasts some of the oldest vines in the World. Our fruit is sourced from these dry-grown, pre-Phylloxera vineyards of the Barossa Valley and also single site vineyards in Eden Valley, McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. We believe great wines are the expression of the soils they are grown in and in the seasons they grow. Through knowledge and experience we strive for balance, structure, concentration, power and breeding.

This comes off a vineyard run by one of Hewitson’s favourite Barossa growers. Falkenberg is certainly one of the famous names of the region. Perfumed red and black fruits on the nose with a subtle coffee and cocoa character. It was fermented for three weeks in open vats before being matured for 18 months in French barriques, of which 25% were new. Seamlessly woven with fine chalky tannins and silky oak working through the medium weight palate. It’s bright and lively. Drink to: 2024-2044; Price: $88.00; Rating: 95 Points; Ray Jordan

The Falkenberg name is a famous one in the Barossa – growers, winemakers, local identities. For the team at Hewitson, it symbolises ‘the heritage of the Barossa Valley’. This is the first release under this name since the 2018. The vines here are 25 years old and the wine was open vat fermented for three weeks, destemmed, and made with “maximum whole bunches”. It was then matured for 18 months in French oak barriques, 25% new. Bottled under cork, a deep gleaming purple, this is a cracking Barossa Valley Shiraz. Rich, complex and full of flavour, we have notes of dark chocolate, blueberries, mocha, plums, cloves and leather – gorgeous stuff. This is seamless with very fine, silky tannins, excellent length and intensity which never drops. A wine which will sail through the next fifteen to twenty years. Drink to: 2043; Price: $88.00; Rating: 95 Points; Ken Gargett

Aromas of macerated plum and blueberry fruits, fine spice and violet tones along with hints of amaro, licorice, mocha, leather, lilac and berry cream. Smooth as silk on the palate with chocolaty tannins and a core of velvety fruit that powers off into the distance. Pure and delicious drinking. Drink to: 2043; Price: $88.00; Alcohol: 13.5%; Rating: 94 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion
