Established in 1998 Hewitson winery is situated in the heart of the Barossa Valley on the historic Seppeltsfield Road and boasts some of the oldest vines in the World. Our fruit is sourced from these dry-grown, pre-Phylloxera vineyards of the Barossa Valley and also single site vineyards in Eden Valley, McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. We believe great wines are the expression of the soils they are grown in and in the seasons they grow. Through knowledge and experience we strive for balance, structure, concentration, power and breeding.
Winemaker Dean Hewitson has carved out a serious reputation with his portfolio of Barossa Valley Mourvèdre-based red wines. Now add this 100% varietal Rosé, mirroring the traditional styles of France's Rosé mecca, Provence. It's pale, glossy with white-topped strawberry crush aromas, leaf and spice and a faint dab of floral fragrance for a touch of glamour. The palate is dry, importantly, with a subtle pepperiness, offering the capacity to party or dine in style. Why drink French when you can do just as well and better with wines like this. A 100% mourvèdre rosé named after the house Xxxxx lived in Provence some 30 years ago. There are notes of cranberry, raspberry, redcurrant and citrus here, with hints of crushed stone, white flowers, subtle meadow herbs and just a hint of white pepper way back in the distance. It's savoury and dry, but that core of red fruit and stone rides nicely throughout the wine's length, and it is very easy to drink. A lovely rosé style done very well indeed. Drink to: 2030; Alcohol: 12.5%; Price: $30.00; Rating: 93 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
A thoroughly beautiful Rosé that shows the remarkable versatility of Mourvèdre. In this case, it's 100% and delivers everything you could want in a light modern expression of Australian Rosé built along Provencal styling. Dry and savoury with light cranberry and red currant fruits on the palate. Fine, keen acidity focuses a long finish. Excellent. Drink to: 2029; Price: $30.00; Rating: 93 Points; Ray Jordan
It's finely expressed on the nose, showing strawberry, lemon peel, crunchy apple, and white floral aromas. The palate is equally charming, with fine focus and a linear mouthfeel, beautifully framed by bright acidity that finishes long and mouth-watering. At its best: now to 2027. Rating: 93 Points; Wine Orbit
This is 100% Mourvèdre (AKA Mataro) from a dry grown Barossa Valley vineyard. Presents pale salmon in hue and packaged in a lightweight, clear glass bottle. Plenty going on: blood orange, pink grapefruit, caramel shards, white strawberry, white cherry, peachy stone fruit, incense smoke and watermelon juice. There’s a smoothness upfront and the mid palate firming to near richness, before crunchy soft red berry, blood orange citrus, dry tobacco and yellow stone fruit slices. Finishes dry with plenty of personality. Rating: 92 Points; Regan Drew
Dean Hewitson has named this wine after the house he and his young family shared several decades ago when he was making Provençal style, Mourvèdre-dominated Rosé. This wine is 100% Mourvèdre and is also bottled in the new lightweight container. The colour is a pale pink/orange, reminiscent of a watery sunset. The nose has a pleasing array of aromas, including dried herbs, raspberries, citrus, florals and a flick of strawberry jam. The wine offers medium length and is fresh and clean, with a mouthwatering juiciness. There is a line of bright acidity and a lingering finish. Now for two years. Rating: 92 Points; Ken Gargett
The pretty, pale hue of this rosé belies its texture and richness. It’s a lovely wine, with vibrant intensity of rose petals and strawberries-and-cream carried on a plush, creamy palate lifted by a fine streak of acidity. Made from 100% mourvèdre, the classic Provence rosé grape, this is the kind of wine that disappears all too easily from the glass. Rating: 92 Points; Melissa Moore
A light and breezy rosé fashioned in the Provençal style with mourvèdre calling the shots, as it so often does in Provence. A delicate dusty, earthy scent in red berry fruits - plum and wild raspberry - join lavender, fennel seed, sage. The palate shows a wild garrigue quality, of the land and earth, with spice and fruit married to bright, mouth-watering acidity. It’s a smart rosé, dry, nicely smooth with a fine tannin finish and good length. It’s definitely a strong consideration as a dining companion. Rating: 90 Points; Jeni Port
