Established by the Lloyd family in 1967, Coriole is family owned and operated and has established a reputation for being a dynamic and innovative producer. Sangiovese was pioneered in Australia by Coriole with the first plantings in 1985. Other Italian varieties such as Fiano have Coriole at the forefront of alternative varieties. Chenin Blanc & Shiraz have a long and successful history at Coriole, with the flagship, Lloyd Reserve Shiraz included in Langton's Classified Wines of Australia.

Sparta is from Coriole's Galaxidia vineyard, planted in 1998, and surrounded by olive trees. The original owners of this vineyard came from the countryside surrounding Sparta. The soils are Terra Rossa - red brown earth over limestone. Coriole's Sparta vineyard produces a vibrant red fruited and rich style of shiraz. Sparta is made to highlight the fruit and floral notes of McLaren Vale shiraz with good density and medium structure.

Estate vines planted '97, open-fermented, plunged, 15 months in French oak (10% new). Deep crimson-purple; a gloriously rich shiraz, its plumage glinting in the sun on the finish after an opening display of blackberry, licorice, spice and acidity. Oak and tannins play important support roles. Bargain++. Drink to: 2037; Date Tasted: Jan 2019; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 95 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
