Jim Chatto is recognised as having one of the very best palates in Australia, and has proved to be an outstanding winemaker. He and wife Daisy long wanted to get a small Tasmanian pinot business up and running, but having moved to the Hunter Valley in 2000, it took six years to find a site that satisfied all of the criteria Jim considers ideal. It is a warm, well drained site in one of the coolest parts of Tasmania, looking out over Glaziers Bay.
Grown close to Isle on a cooler site Seven Inch is named after the local beach. Deliciously red to black fruit spectrum.
A beautiful pinot noir sourced from Max and Sue Kitchell's Glaziers Bay vineyard, just a kilometre or so from neighbours of Jim and Daisy Chatto's home in the Huon Valley. Bright mid-ruby in the glass with a wisp of struck flint twisting its way through the pure red plum, raspberry, cranberry and red cherry fruits. It's lithe, layered and complex, with souk-like spice, leaf litter, charcuterie, meadow flowers, enoki mushroom broth, char siu, nori sheets and crushed riverstone. There's a wonderful maritime energy to this wine. It has sapidity and sinew in just the right doses, with filigree, purity and velocity in equal measure on the fade out.
