Villa Argiano lay claim to being the oldest wine estate in Montalcino, located below Saint'Angelo in Colle, some 8km from the famous wine town. Built in 1581 the Villa passed through many sets of hands over the centuries and in 1992, the current owner Noemi Marone Cinzano purchased the property. In the past the renown consultant, Giacomo Tachis, the man behind Sassacaia, was involved in the project and the Bordeaux varieties were planted but today Bordeaux-trained winemaker Hans Vinding-Diers holds the reins. The estates range of wines is superb and includes Suolo, their silky Sangiovese and stunning Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino.
This outstanding red wine is a quite recent expression of Argiano’s viticultural potential in relation to red wines made with Sangiovese. ‘Solengo’, which is Tuscan for “lone wild boar”, is the product of the combination between Tuscan soil and French grape-varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Syrah. It is the fruit of the “creation” of the internationally acclaimed former oenologist GiacomoTachis, which now continues with the work of Argiano’s team.
Solengo, a blend of Cab Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, has seemingly infinite depth thanks to its finely-tuned aromas of red cherry, toasted nut, cinnamon, almond and modern, smoky hickory. Elegant, vibrant and buoyant in the mouth, drink this wine after 2012. Wine Enthusiast; 93 Points
The 2004 Solengo presents gorgeous aromatics followed by super-ripe dark fruit, crushed flowers, herbs, spices and sweet toasted oak that flow from its opulent, full-bodied frame. Showing superb concentration, the wine is supported by an attractive note of underlying minerality that provides balance as well as a sense of proportion. It offers outstanding length, a silky-textured personality and ripe, sweet tannins on the finish in a rare display that marries power with elegance. It will be tempting to drink this early, but a few years of cellaring will give the wine an opportunity to express the fullest range of its potential. 93 Points; Antonio Galloni (The Wine Advocate)
