Established in 1977 by Irishman Dr John Lagan, the Xanadu vineyards now owned by the Rathbone family continue to flourish in a near-perfect viticultural environment that inspired Dr Lagan; rich free draining gravel soils; an abundant water supply and a unique maritime climate. Winemaker Glenn Goodall mirrors the original vision; to produce premium wines that reflect the true character of the region in synergy with the environment and vineyards.

The wine displays vibrant, characteristic Cabernet aromas of cassis, mulberries, and blue fruits entwined with hints of mocha, nori, and potpourri. The palate is full-bodied yet refined, the generous palate offers a core of inky berry fruits; boysenberry, blackcurrants and Satsuma plums. Dense and well-structured, the palate is layered with these dark fleshy fruit characteristics and ripe tannins which culminate through to a persistent Cabernet finish. Cabernet Sauvignon (90%), Malbec (5%), Petit Verdot (5%)

I've tasted some truly wonderful cabernets from Xanadu under this label over many years, but I have to say I've tasted none better than this. It is a simply wonderful example of Margaret River delivered with poise, power, and a certain panache. Captures the vintage well with the power and yet subtle restraint that it's best known for. It's medium to full-bodied but beautifully elegant. With an aroma of classically varietal blackcurrant, dark plums, and a slightly leafy bay leaf sort of character with a trace of minerally oyster shell, leading into a palate that has power and real poise. It's a wine of tremendous brightness and energy. And while it's drinking quite beautifully now, you can guarantee this will cellar for many years. Drink to: 2026-2046; Price: $45.00; Rating: 97 Points; Ray Jordan
