Aldo and Milena Vaira established G.D.Vajra in 1972 with some of the best vineyards in the Langhe. In total they own 25 hectares of vines with a further 10 hectares contracted for their production. They produce on average 100,000 bottles a year. Aldo Vajra and his children Giuseppe, Francesca and Isidoro aim to make wines that express the terroir of their vineyards, which are located in the Vergne zone of Barolo. The wines reflect their maker’s highly individual and personal style, they exhibit great nuance, elegance, and understatement, just like the man himself.
Bricco Delle Viole is Vajra's most prestigious vineyard, which gave birth to the "Vajra style". It has the finest texture, like filigree in your mouth and is easily capable of withstanding the test of time. The 1999 vintage was one producing very good quality yet again for Nebbiolo-based wines.
The 2012 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is pure class. A decidedly sensual, inviting Bricco delle Viole, the 2012 fleshes out in the glass with an effortless, inviting personality that is impossible to resist. Deep red cherry and plum notes open up first, followed by the classic floral notes that are so typical of this site. In 2012, the Bricco delle Viole is quite forward and fruit-driven, with essentially none of the angular contours that are typical when the wine is young. All of that means the 2012 will deliver immense pleasure pretty much upon release. There is so much to like here. The only real question is whether the 2012 will shut down in bottle or not. This is another addictively delicious Barolo from the Vajra family. Rating: 94 Points; Antonio Galloni
This is rich and almost liqueur-like, aromatically at least, with cherry and Framboise, spice and plenty of roses and a little liquorice. Full bodied, silky and supple, ripe sweet cherry/raspberry fruit layered with spice and almond, bell-clear acidity through its core, and a surging finish where the minerally tannin grips gently and earthy, and wipes the palate clean and fresh. Clarity and purity. They’ve knocked out a spectacular wine this vintage. Tasted: Jul 2016; Alcohol: 14%; Price: $190; Closure: Cork; Drink: 2020-2042+; Rating: 96 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
