Neldner Road wines are sourced from various vineyard sites throughout the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Dave Powell employ traditional, minimalist winemaking techniques to produce a wine that speaks of the place that it was grown.
Planted on the Neldner Road Vineyard over 30 years ago from cuttings off the oldest vines on the vineyard (whose fruit we use for the Kraehe Shiraz), the 2021 Neldner Road Shiraz showcases the qualities that we strive for.
If you ever wanted a window into how good the Barossa was in 2021, then this wonderful wine from Dave Powell is the one. Aromas are completely engaging with a savoury, fruit cake and plum character with a slightly spicy lift. The palate is sumptuously rich and balanced. It’s almost effortlessly smooth and lingering with loads of dark fruits massing in the middle palate before heading to a long finish. Terrific wine. Drink to: 2025-2040; Price: $100.00; Rating: 96 Points; Ray Jordan
Dave Powell’s new label can be expected to provide some stellar wines, and no one will be disappointed with this thrilling Barossa Shiraz. Coming from a great vintage for the region no doubt helps. Under cork. The colour here is an inky black maroon with dark magenta on the rim. The immediate impression is of a gorgeous but typically Barossa nose, supported by just the merest flick of oak – look hard or you’ll miss it, so deftly has it been handled. The nose exhibits notes of mocha, cassis, a hint of vanilla, beef stock, coffee beans, blackberries, licorice and plums. There is excellent balance throughout, and the silkiest of tannins with very good length, and a lingering finish. This will drink beautifully for a good decade, likely more. Hardly everyday drinking but there are a lot of wines, from here and elsewhere, at this price and higher which do not come close. Date: May 2025; Drink by: 2025-2035; Price: $100.00; Rating: 95 Points; Ken Gargett
The volume of fruit here is excellent, as is the smoothness of the texture, as is the fine grain of the tannin. Every nuance here has been beautifully ordered, delivered and arranged. It tastes of rich plum, sweet blackberry, hay, cedarwood and choc-orange, the latter infused deliciously throughout. This wine is as substantial as it is delicious. Alcohol: 14.5%; Price: $100.00; Rating: 94 Points; Campbell Mattinson
