Established in 1860 Tahbilk is one of Australia’s most beautiful & historic wineries, located in the Nagambie Lakes region of Central Victoria and one of the nation’s premium viticultural areas. The vineyard comprises 200 hectares of vines including whites of Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne; the reds – Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre as well as the traditional varieties. Tahbilk is further blessed with an abundance of “old vine” plantings including Shiraz from 1860, Cabernet Sauvignon back to 1949 and Marsanne from 1927. Tahbilk is the first Australian winery to be carboNZero certified at both an organisation and product level and one of only eight wineries in the world.
Unoaked, crushed and destemmed. Tank fermented with cultured yeast. Just look at that straw-yellow colour! So youthful and just 6 years old! This is marsanne at its best, on the long road to a glorious future. It just gets better and better with each year, all without a skerrick of oak. Honeysuckle, buttered toast, jasmine and pear skin scents envelope the senses. The acidity tastes young and bright, belying the wine's age. What value lies here. Drink to: 2030; Price: $26.00; Date Tasted: January 2021; Alcohol: 12.5%; Rating: 96 Points & Special Value Star; Jeni Port; James Halliday Wine Companion
The honeysuckle aroma of this marsanne bursts out of the glass when swirled, perhaps a hint of jasmine or field flowers too. The palate lives up to the promise and then some: the variety is often sotto voce when young, but here it is exuberant, aided by chalky acidity. Drink to: 2035; Price: $18.00; Date Tasted: September 2019; Alcohol: 12.5%; Rating: 95 Points & Special Value Star & Top 100 Wines; James Halliday; Wine Companion
