Deriving its name from the picturesque Mount Chalambar near Great Western in central Victoria, Seppelt Chalambar Shiraz has an excellent pedigree, having been made since 1953. Originally crafted by the legendary Colin Preece and labelled as Chalambar Burgundy, this wine has become one of the most sought after Seppelt releases each year due to its consistency, quality and value. Sourced from the Grampians and Heathcote regions in Western and Central Victoria, there is a great balance of violets, pepper and spice from the Grampians fruit that provides contrasting elegance to the strength of Heathcote's dark plum fruit.
The 2022 vintage harnesses the individual strengths and distinct characteristics of spicy, floral Grampians Shiraz complemented by juicy Heathcote Shiraz. Expect savoury spice aromas with a medium-bodied palate abundant with mulberry fruits, complex spice flavours, and fine, velvety tannins.
The delivery of sweet, ripe fruit flavour is impeccable, as is the balance of savoury spice notes. This tastes of red licorice and hay, cedarwood and clove, a run of pure plum-and-cream flavour cruising throughout. It sits just on the bold side of medium weight, and while ready to be consumed now, is likely to be deceptively age-worthy. This is a good to very good release of this much-loved wine and is absolutely satisfying.
