One of the greatest names in all of Burgundy, dating back to the 1930s when Armand was one of the first of five domaines to defy the negociants and bottle their own wine. The Rousseau name is synonymous with Gevrey-Chambertin; Armand passed the reins to Charles who on retirement passed control to his son Eric.
Ripe and exceptionally fresh aromas of poached plum, violet, wood toast and spice give way to gorgeously textured, sappy and impressively powerful larger-bodied flavors that exhibit simply stunning length on the balanced and only moderately austere finale. This is seriously good though quite firm and in contrast to several of the prior wines, one that's going to need at least a decade of keeping first. The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques was one of the more backward, primary wines in the range when I visited. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, dark berries, burning embers and orange zest, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with a sweet, creamy core of fruit framed by an elegantly muscular chassis of powdery tannin. Date: Jan 2025; Rating: 94-96 Points; William Kelley; Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate
