Planted in 1999, established by brothers Brian & Kevyn Joy, and currently operated day to day by Graeme Miles in the Vineyard, and Leighton Joy in the winery. Pyren is planted to Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. The house style is to meld the expression of very high quality fruit with integrity and artistic freedom. The endeavour to fine tune the best style for Pyren's fruit is a continuous one that knows no bounds
At eight years of age this has mellowed and is soft, but it still feels substantial. It’s at the perfect stage of its development, and while it will keeping maturing for some years yet, we have now entered its peak drinking years. It tastes of tobacco, sweet cherries, leather, ironstone, mint and chocolate, the net effect soft, fresh, complex and mouthfilling. As a mature wine, this is a lovely wine to drink. Closure: Screwcap; Tasted: October 2024 ; Alcohol: 14%; Price: $80.00; Rated: 94 Points; Campbell Mattinson
With all that extra time in bottle this Shiraz from the Pyrenees region of Victoria is starting to move into its best work. Already showing some nice seductive leathery notes with a touch of spice on the nose. The palate reveals an earthy leathery character with fine chalky tannins and a gentle use of oak combining to bring it through to a long smooth and quite seamless finish. I like this to drink now but there is a little more time in the tank if needed. Date: Sept 2025; Price: $80.00; Drink by: 2025-2030; Rating: 93 Points; Ray Jordan; Wine Pilot
