Neudorf Moutere Chardonnay has an admirable history and each year we are impressed by its consistency. Despite wild variation in climate and vintage idiosyncrasies the wine rises above all to deliver controlled and aristocratic allure. This commanding chardonnay truly reflects the Moutere terroir, despite atypical growing season. The driest spring on record was followed by a moist summer with unusually warm nights, and a moderate but relatively dry harvest period. The wine will be remembered as one of elegance, rather lithe in stature, and approachable. Rich and powerful with wet slate notes and a hint of grapefruit pith. Subtle at the start, it surges across the palate to a tapered, mineral, salivatory finish.

Named after Tim and Judy’s daughter Rosie, the block sits on a slightly higher elevation to the Home Block just 1km away. This Chardonnay is a sibling to what is deemed the keystone in our portfolio - Neudorf Home Block Moutere Chardonnay.

Rosie’s Blocks seem to have some serious mojo. Excellent wines come from this place, with gentle winemaking alongside. Or considered but gentle. Anyways, Neudorf really shows form with chardonnay and should be on radars for the cognoscenti. Flavourtown, but judged well. Deep chardonnay flavours, touches of oak and lees savouriness in the mix, a lively, fino-like saline minerally lick and gently palate staining characters more generally. It’s fragrant, shows concentration but freshness, beautifully balanced and superb, invigorating finish. Classic, done so righteously. Smokin’ wine. Tasted: Sept 2022; Alcohol: 13.5%; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2022-2030; Rated: 95 Points; Mike Bennie; The Wine Front
