Ben Riggs has been making wine under his namesake label since 2001, after an already extensive career making wine in McLaren Vale, and around the world. Riggs follows the philosophy “iconic wines from iconic regions”. Whether it’s McLaren Vale Shiraz, Coonawarra Cabernet, or Clare Valley Riesling, his wines are expressing the essence of the vineyard and variety in a style that is big, rich and complex, but also with finesse, texture and elegance. In Ben’s own words: “Think Ella Fitzgerald – bombastic and powerful with a huge vocal range, yet with purity of tone and a gentle sensibility when needed.”
The 2015 Mr. Riggs Shiraz is a blend of two great McLaren Vale Shiraz vineyards: Piebald Gully, and Gateway. Perhaps one of Australia’s most consistent wine growing regions, McLaren Vale enjoys a very Mediterranean climate driven by dominant winter rainfall, low humidity, warm summers, and the moderating influence of the nearby Gulf St Vincent.

Very deep, bright red/purple colour. The bouquet is latent, deep and shy at this stage, quietly brooding and dense, with full body but not overdone, the alcohol and other components all in harmony. Licorice and kola notes. Serious structure. A very smart shiraz, which leaves the impression that it has more to show us, given time. Rating: 95 Pointsl Huon Hooke
