Established in 1972 Mountadam High Eden estate is Australia’s first cool climate Chardonnay vineyard. Situated on a unique rocky outcrop ranging in elevation up to 550m, the vineyards have a commanding easterly aspect over the Eden Valley. This wine is made using tradition methods and is a blend of the exclusive multi clonal resources available on the estate.
The wine has a light golden colour, with classic Chardonnay fruit aromas of peach, nectarine and ripe figs. Typical of Mountadam Chardonnay there are flavors of grilled nuts with clove and nutmeg spice supported by a citrus core. There is tremendous depth of flavor, which lingers elegantly on the palate suggesting the wine has significant aging potential of at least 10 years.
From the oldest plantings on the estate, fermented in French oak, matured for 12-14 months before a barrel selection for this wine, which is one of the best produced ex the Eden Valley as a whole. It has fluid grace and effortless power, the fruit flavours at the midpoint of the stone fruit (white peach)/citrus (grapefruit) spectrum. Lovely wine. Luscious, long and creamy, with a vibrant presence of white peach, grapefruit, melon and nutty yeast-derived notes backed by restrained vanilla oak, wheatmeal and buttery malolactic notes. It’s fragrant and pristine, soft and generous, with a long, elegant finish wrapped in racy acids. Drink: 2021 to 2024+; Rating: 94 Points; Jeremy Oliver; OnWine
