Luigi Baudana is one of the last garagiste estates still operating in the Langhe region. It is also the smallest of all the VinConnect Piemontese wineries. In 2009, Francesca, Isidoro and Guiseppe, the three children of famed Aldo and Milena Vajra of G.D Vajra, joined the Baudana family to bring new energies and an uncompromised respect to this story.
A true “village” expression of Serralunga d’Alba Barolo, the organic and biodynamic vineyard is currently a cooperative effort between Baudana and the G.D. Vajra winery. At approximately 250-350 meters above sea level with south to south-west facing slopes, this single hectare vineyard is positioned between fossils of Sant’Agatha and formations of Lequio. The white soil is compact and calcareous with limited amounts of sand which enhance water retention.
Quite pretty, floral, dried roses, dried cherry, a bit of mineral. Full-bodied, but kind of light on its feet, succulent, dried strawberry, fresh and lively, a juicy orange and dried mint character, tannin grips gently, but feels dry and mineral, and the finish is again all red fruits layered in with spice. And long. Quite the charmer. Tasted: Aug 2020; Alcohol: 14.5%; Price: $183; Closure: Cork; Drink: 2024-2036+; Rated: 95+ Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
The Luigi Baudana 2016 Barolo Baudana opens to a saturated and dark garnet color. Of these three Baroli from Luigi Baudana, this is perhaps the most complete and round. It shows the mineral signature that we got in the Cerretta (also from Serralunga d'Alba) with a bigger fruit profile, complete with sweet cherry and blackberry preserves. In fact, this wine feels a bit riper, sunnier and sweeter than the others in this grouping. Last year, in the 2015 vintage, this was my favorite wine. But in this tighter and more linear 2016 vintage, I prefer the Cerretta by a very small margin. Both wines are excellent. Only 3,500 bottles were released.
