Leeuwin Estate is one of the founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district.

In 1972, legendary Napa Valley winemaker, Robert Mondavi, first identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard as being ideal for the production of premium wine and provided early mentorship to Denis and Tricia Horgan who founded Leeuwin Estate in 1974. The initial vineyards were planted by hand over a five year period from 1975. Maintaining a team of highly skilled and dedicated winemakers, Leeuwin Estate is now under the direction of two generations of the founding family.

Prelude Vineyards wines are made from fruit producing the most readily expressive wines, with the objective that they will drink well soon after release. Whilst still retaining ageing potential they impart typical Margaret River impact and character. The Prelude label celebrates Leeuwin’s association with the musical arts through the staging of the annual Leeuwin Concert Series.

Just lovely Margaret River cabernet aromas and flavours abound. Textbook stuff, quality wine with the fruit infused with cedary, spicy oak, menthol, a hint of chocolate and bay leaves. It’s flavoursome, fuller bodied but not at all heavy, with an abundance of ripe, supple tannins and fine acidity. All things considered, including the price, this is a steal. Date: Jan 2026; Alcohol: 13.5%; Price: $34.00; Drink by: 2036; Rating: 95 Points & Special Value Star; James Halliday Wine Companion
