The Kooyong vineyard and winery, established in 1996, was acquired by the Gjergja family in 2004. Kooyong is located in Tuerong, towards the northern end of the Mornington Peninsula. The majority of the forty hectare site is planted to Pinot Noir, with a substantial area of Chardonnay and several small sections of Pinot Gris.
All Kooyong and Port Phillip Estate wines are entirely domain grown, vinified and bottled. The wines in the Quartier stable are produced from estate grown fruit and fruit from neighbouring vineyards.
The Kooyong Massale is an estate blend of Pinot Noir parcels from the Kooyong and Ballewindi vineyards. The parcels in this wine represent 16.79 hectares. The fruit was fermented, without yeast inoculation, in open vats for 18 to 21 days, with a small proportion of whole bunches included. The malolactic conversion also, is indigenous. The maturation period is 12 months in French oak, 15% new.
A deep cherry hue. The nose is vibrantly fruited, with dark cherry and raspberry aromas, violetty purple floral elements and top notes of savoury spice, earth and undergrowth. The palate is ebullient and somewhat generous, with attractive yet balanced ripeness propelling the red/purple fruits and spicy dark floral characters. Balanced acidity and fine but plentiful tannins help this wine linger in the mouth.
