Johannes Hasselbach has well and truly hit his stride after taking the winemaking reins from his late father Fritz a few years back. Warm, charming, modest and brilliant Fritz Hasselbach, who passed away from illness in October 2016, was the man who lifted the estate into the Rheinhessen's top flight. Gunderloch was the first winery in Germany to put its entire range under screwcap and holds the ‘claim to fame’ of scoring a hat-trick of 100-point reviews in Wine Spectator.

Features about 23 g/l residual sugar. From Rheinhessen. Very juicy and fun to drunk. Green apple sorbet and lime, spice and flowers, a pleasant twist of rind bitterness, intensity and burst of flavour, and a long chalky/textured finish. The balance and appeal is so spot on. What a delight. Tasted: Feb 19; Alcohol: 10.5%; Price: $32; Closure: Screwcap; Drink: 2020-2024+; Rated: 93 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front

From the Rothenberg, Pettenthal and Hipping vineyards. Chervil, lemon and grapefruit peel on the nose express the Roter Hang spiciness. Citrus zestiness with a juicy but tart red apple sweetness in a classic off-dry style that pivots on Riesling’s incomparable freshness. Slender-bodied, and dangerously easy to drink. Rating: 93 Points; Anne Krebiehl MW; Decanter Magazine July 2019
