Gianfranco Alessandria holds 7 hectares of vineyards divided between Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto, in the località San Giovanni, the area of some of Monforte d'Alba's best known Crus. The Alessandria family, including the enterprising daughters Marta and Vittoria, farms based on natural principles, respecting the time and methods required to produce stunning wines true to their soils.

It is made exclusively of Nebbiolo grapes, which are vinified in thermo-controlled steel tanks, with a maceration of 7-8 days. The aging takes place in small French oak barrels for 24 months. Ruby red in color with garnet shades, it opens on the nose with aromas of red fruits and spicy notes. In the mouth it is dry and aromatic, with velvety tannins and excellent persistence.

Packaged with a black label, the Gianfranco Alessandria 2019 Barolo San Giovanni (with 5,000 bottles made) is born in a little-known cru located in Monforte d'Alba. The wine is padded with extra richness and rich fruit in this vintage, and it reveals lots of aromatic detail and nuance with wild cherry, rose, crushed stone and a dab of dried mint. The finish is dry and mineral driven in an especially subtle manner. Rating: 96 Points; Monica Larner; Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
