Winemaker Andrew Santarossa clearly considers Alpine Valley saperavi ready for its premium status moment. It's an impressive wine showcasing a refined, savoury style. Offers up a degree of richness in dark cherry, black berries, dark chocolate, aniseed and toasty spice, with an earthy, dried herbal lift across the middle palate. Tannins rule the Georgian grape variety, and they rule here, finishing astringent and dry, which is your firm reminder to age further. Drink to: 2037; Alcohol: 14.5%; Price: $65.00; Rating: 93 Points; James Halliday Wine Companion
This red wine is both bold and slender at once. It offers bold, dark, almost inky berried fruit flavours, but then it's also strung with herb and tobacco-like notes, and it then finishes with a leafy, peppery burst. Characterful, it most certainly is. It's keen with tannin, as this variety often is, but it feels well crafted and well balanced. You'd expect this wine to improve with a little extra bottle age too. Date Tasted: September 2026; Alcohol: 14.5%; Price: $65.00; Rating: 92 Points; Campbell Mattinson
The inky flesh of Saperavi is always a good wine to close your eyes and experience tasting it blind, for its pigment does not always abide its flavour profile. In this case you'll find mulberries and Davidson plums, lilac tinged blueberries and butterfly pea powder. Ancho chillis and clouds of carob. The palate is lively, acidity perky and lifting the wine into a medium bodied nature. Tannins are very fine and lick the front of the palate. This would look sensational with sweet blood pudding smeared on sourdough. Alcohol: 14.5%; Price: $65.00; Rating: 93 Points; Shanteh Wale
