The new faces behind the Curtis Family Vineyards are Mark, Thomas & Jenna Curtis, with the guidance of their father, Claudio Curtis who lives on the vineyard just outside McLaren Vale. The name Curtis is thought to derive from Curtius, a noble and wealthy family of the First and Second Centuries AD, the Roman Empire era originating from the Latinium people.
Martins Vineyards sources fruit from a combination of owned vineyards and premium McLaren Vale growers. The blend of individual vineyard and sub-regional characteristics is the key to the resulting style. Sub regions are Blewitt Springs, McLaren Flat, Willunga and McLaren Vale.
Deep-tinted Shiraz that delivers plenty of heft while maintaining a perfect balance between tannins, acidity and fruit/alcohol sweetness. The result is a delicious wine with real drinkability and the potential to develop gracefully with bottle age. A seductively silken texture is the cherry on the cake. Complex, perfectly proportioned red with a hint of spicy oak standing out from luscious ripe fruit which holds centre-stage. Rating: 95 Points; Bob Campbell MW; The Real Review
A treasure of a vintage. This is the kind of wine you want to peer further into its depths with each sip. The palate is restrained, allowing the fruit to complement the brooding spice of tonka bean, cocoa and nigella seed that lingers on the finish. For all its ripe fruit, acidity is undulating and keeps the wine medium bodied with a ribbon of fine tannins intertwined. A beautiful wine that will continue to evolve. Absolutely cracking McLaren Vale Shiraz. This is a star of the range for me. It is assisted in coming from such a superb vintage – a year that absolutely must be well represented in every serious cellar. A wine exhibiting regional plushness, this is quintessential McLaren Vale Shiraz. Supple and seamless, balanced and with juicy acidity, there is serious length here, with a gentle fade and lingering finish. Drink to: 2025-2035; Price: $150.00; Rating: 95 Points; Ken Gargett
