Based on the single vineyard philosophy of winemaking, Craggy Range was the first in the Southern Hemisphere to specialise in the production of single vineyard wines from the most prestigious winegrowing regions across New Zealand including Martinborough, Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough.
Sophia’, meaning ‘wisdom’ in Greek mythology, pays tribute to the goddess of knowledge and experience, information and understanding, a philosophy adopted by our winemakers and viticulturists when creating this wine. A refined and elegant hand-crafted Merlot dominant blend that represents both the vigneron’s art and inherent understanding of the land ensuring ‘Sophia’ is the finest expression of the terroir and the people. Darkest red. Brooding aromatically with blackcurrant, blackberry, dried red rose and cedar notes emerging. The wine exerts elegance across the palate with a pure red /black fruit core drawn long by layers of fine grained tannins.
A super-smooth blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with dense complex mixed red berries, blackcurrant, floral, violet, anise, spice, cedar, new leather and nutty oak flavours. A powerful wine that's impressive now but shows obvious cellaring potential. Rating: 5 Stars, 97 Points; Bob Campbell MW
The palate is beautifully proportioned with rich, succulent fruit flavours of blackberries, black and red currants with dark-red plums. The fruit unfolds spice notes with cedary and pencilly oak, along with notes of herbs and minerals. The fruit is vibrant with plenty of acid energy, and along with the richness forms an elegantly concentrated heart, with balanced tannin structure and grip.
