Based on the single vineyard philosophy of winemaking, Craggy Range was the first in the Southern Hemisphere to specialise in the production of single vineyard wines from the most prestigious winegrowing regions across New Zealand including Martinborough, Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough.
Headed by Chief Winemaker Matt Stafford, awarded the Air New Zealand Young Winemaker of the Year Award in 2007, the reputation of Craggy Range’s wine portfolio is synonymous with quality and attention to detail. The winery has received a number of internationally recognised awards including Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards - New World Winery of the Year in 2014. It was also awarded the most popular New Zealand Wine by US Wine & Spirits Magazine.
Le sol translated from French means ‘the soil’, appropriate when one considers the significant impact the stony soils of our Gimblett Gravels Vineyard have on our wine called "Le Sol". They keep the growth and crop of these old clone Syrah vines in check and provide warmth in the autumn, all critical factors in developing the enormous character and presence this wine has. Traditionally made, heady aromas, luscious yet classical texture. "Le Sol" is all at once luscious, elegant and exuberant – and in a very short time it has shown the breeding of Syrah in the Gimblett Gravels.
Dense, intense and complex syrah that combines power and finesse. A deep, dark wine with a heady perfume and dark berry, plum, violet and pepper-spice flavours. Clearly a wine worth cellaring, although it is deliciously drinkable now. Date Tasted: March 2021; Rating: 99 Points; Bob Campbell MW; The Real Review
