It has been a remarkable journey for Clonakilla. When John Kirk planted the first vines in 1971 he had no idea that his vineyard would one day be celebrated as one of the best in the country. Along the way there have been trials and tribulations as well as moments of unprecendented success. Over time something important has become clear: Murrumbateman and Shiraz are one of those rare combinations in the world of wine that can produce something truly exciting.
Murrumbateman’s cool, continental climate and decomposed granite soils are perfectly suited to Riesling. The 2017 vintage was built on the wettest winter and early spring that any of us can remember, followed by a beautiful warm and dry summer. We picked generous crops of perfectly ripened grapes. Drink now for its pristine floral, citrus-edged fruit or cellar for up to 15 years and watch it develop lime and toast characters with age.
Canberra had its third coldest vintage in 50 years, with floods, hail and frost until January – when warm, dry weather took hold until the end of the late vintage, riesling excelling with incredible flavours, crisp acidity and perfect balance.
