The Produttori del Barbaresco, founded in 1958, now has 51 members and controls more than 100 hectares (250 acres) of premium Nebbiolo vineyards in Barbaresco. Each family is in full control of its land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with centuries old skill and dedication.
In great vintages, nine single-vineyard Barbarescos are produced from nine classic premium sites within the Barbaresco village boundaries: Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Montefico, Muncagota, and Rio Sordo. These are the geographical names of sites where Nebbiolo grapes have always been cultivated. The name of the single-vineyards, the total number of bottles produced, and the name of the owners of the vineyards are marked on the labels.
Wild berry, violet, new leather, forest floor and eucalyptus aromas lift out of the glass. The elegant, full-bodied palate delivers dried black cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and dried mint alongside taut, polished tannins. Given the hot, dry growing season, this is a more powerful and concentrated version of Asili. Date Tasted: Jan 2020; Rating: 95 Points; Kerin O'Keefe; Wine Enthusiast
One of the protagonists in this group of nine, the Produttori del Barbaresco 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Asili (with some 13,333 bottles made) shows bright cherry fruit, dried raspberry and blood orange. The wine's delicate aromatic layering continues with rusty iron, aniseed, tea leaf and camphor ash. Those lifted and vertical aromas contribute to the energy and vibrancy that this wine awards to the palate. The finish is extremely polished and tight, and those pretty flavors are folded neatly into the wine's silky texture. This wine has many years, or decades, of aging built into its inner clock. Tasted: July; Drink: 2024-2050; Rating: 96 Points; Monica Larner; Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate
The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is an attractive wine with a good bit of the Asili plushness and silkiness that makes wines from this site so alluring. As with all of these wines, the Asili is not as expressive of site as it can be in cooler years. Drink: 2022-2040; Date Tasted: Nov 2019; Rating: 94 Points; Antonio Galloni; vinous.com
A standout for finesse, cherry and almond flavour, subtle perfume of fennel and roses. Succulent, fine grain to insistent tannin, freshness, length, pulls out the strawberries and pretty things on a very long and fluid finish. Wonderful. So mineral, and fine. Tasted: Aug 2020; Alcohol: 14.5%; Price: $140; Closure: Cork; Drink: 2022-2042+; Rated: 97 Points; Gary Walsh; The Wine Front
Ripe cherry, cherry cola whiffs, rose water, strawberry and faint alpine herb notes. Really pretty to taste, lighter, finer and friskier than many of its stablemates, tannin a weave through the wine, lengthy, sleek ribbons of such. Purity and freshness are calling cards too. Beautiful wine of delicacy yet strictness. Excellent expression. Tasted: Aug 2020; Alcohol: 14.5%; Price: $140; Closure: Cork; Drink: 2022-2042+; Rated: 97 Points; Mike Bennie; The Wine Front
