Craggy Range Sophia 2014
Based on the single vineyard philosophy of winemaking, Craggy Range was the first in the Southern Hemisphere to specialise in the production of single vineyard wines from the most prestigious winegrowing regions across New Zealand including Martinborough, Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough.
Sophia’, meaning ‘wisdom’ in Greek mythology, pays tribute to the goddess of knowledge and experience, information and understanding, a philosophy adopted by our winemakers and viticulturists when creating this wine. A refined and elegant hand-crafted Merlot dominant blend that represents both the vigneron’s art and inherent understanding of the land ensuring ‘Sophia’ is the finest expression of the terroir and the people. Darkest red. Brooding aromatically with blackcurrant, blackberry, dried red rose and cedar notes emerging. The wine exerts elegance
across the palate with a pure red /black fruit core drawn long by layers of fine grained tannins.
This is total seduction. Youthful yet immensely complex and harmonious, the gorgeous bouquet shows dark plum, blueberry, cedar and violet characters, with touches of bay leaf and clove. The palate is concentrated and beautifully rounded, and offers layers of rich texture and delectable fruit flavours, brilliantly structured by fine, chalky tannins. The wine is powerful and graceful at the same time, and offers a huge potential for stylish development. A blend of 61% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Cabernet Franc from their Gimblett Gravels vineyard. At its best: 2018 to 2030. Rating: 98 Points; Sam Kim; Wine Orbit
Very rich and succulently sweet fruit flavours of ripe dark-red and black berries, and black plums intermingle with layers of blackcurrants and waves of exotic spicy oak. This has great depth and concentration, the power and richness of the fruit sweetness matched by supporting, fine-grained tannin extraction and structure. The fruit remains vibrant and full of vitality, exuding youthful primacy. The wine carries with great presence to a solid, very long and sustained finish of sweet fruit and spicy oak. This is a powerfully concentrated, succulently sweet Merlot/Cabernet blend with exotic oaking, matching fine structure and youthful vitality. Match with roasted red meats and semi-hard cheeses over he next 10-12+ years. Rating: 19.5/20; Raymond Chan Wine Reviews
A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. A dense and obviously youthful red with dark berry, blackcurrant, cassis and raspberry flavours together with graphite and pepper spice, and a hint of violet and floral characters. Quite closed with a firm structure. Hard to judge now. Plenty of potential. Tasting this wine encouraged me to open a 2007 Sophia, which was in magnificent form.
